Texas audit puts Bitcoin miners under review
- Texas ordered an audit of data centres seeking ERCOT grid connections, temporarily halting new approvals during the review.
- Bernstein said existing Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) miners with approved electricity contracts are unlikely to face significant disruption.
- The analysts said restrictions on new capacity could increase the value of already-approved power connections.
Texas ordered an audit of data centres seeking ERCOT connections, but Bernstein expects limited impact on approved Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) miners.
Governor Greg Abbott directed Texas regulators to conduct the audit amid public concerns about rapid data centre expansion.
“However, we believe, this audit throttles speculative data center pipeline,” said Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani.
Bernstein said IREN and Riot Platforms already have fully approved ERCOT grid connections in Texas.
Following the announcement, Cipher Digital shares were down more than 7% in Tuesday premarket trading.
Bernstein said Cipher, Core Scientific and CleanSpark could face greater exposure to future public opposition.
The analysts said approved power capacity could become more valuable if Texas continues restricting new data centre connections.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $63,957.96.
