The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has outlined regulatory challenges associated with artificial intelligence and autonomous trading systems in financial markets.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig delivered the remarks on 28 October 2026 at the agency’s inaugural Frontier Forum on Super Intelligence.
“The CFTC is leaning in,” said CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig, referring to the agency’s use of artificial intelligence to strengthen market surveillance.
Selig said autonomous systems could help investors analyse markets, manage risk and execute transactions, while also creating new oversight challenges.
He raised questions about developer liability, registration requirements and accountability when autonomous agents conduct financial transactions on behalf of users.
The speech also examined derivatives linked to computing capacity, which could help businesses manage exposure to changes in computing costs and availability.
The CFTC said it received more than 100 public comments on potential computing-capacity derivatives markets after seeking industry feedback earlier in 2026.
The remarks highlight the regulatory questions facing the CFTC as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency and derivatives markets increasingly intersect.
