Zanzibar police are questioning crypto fund founder Joe McCann after the death of his fiancée, Ashly Robinson, during a holiday on the island.

Robinson, 31, died in hospital on April 9 after being found unresponsive in a hotel room, with police initially ruling the case a suicide while continuing their investigation.

Authorities are holding McCann’s passport pending autopsy results, with reports indicating the couple had a “misunderstanding” prior to the incident and were staying in separate rooms.

Robinson’s family has challenged the police account, saying the circumstances do not align with her recent engagement and birthday celebrations, and calling for further clarity.

Police said hotel staff discovered Robinson with a belt around her neck before she was taken to hospital, where she later died.

McCann is the founder of crypto investment firm Asymmetric, which has faced challenges including reported losses of 80% during a period of market volatility.

The case remains under investigation as authorities await autopsy results, with no charges announced and limited public comment from McCann.
