US lawmaker says Bitcoin challenges authoritarian rule
- US Representative William Timmons said Bitcoin could become the "beginning of the end" for authoritarian governments by enabling financial freedom outside state control.
- A House roundtable examined how decentralised digital assets can support dissidents, journalists and activists facing financial repression.
- Lawmakers also discussed China's digital currency strategy and the importance of US leadership in digital asset regulation and financial technology.
US Representative William Timmons said Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) and decentralised technologies could fundamentally challenge authoritarian governments during a House roundtable examining the role of digital assets in countries with restrictive financial systems.
Timmons said Bitcoin could represent "the beginning of the end of all authoritarian governments," arguing that decentralised financial networks can help people avoid state-imposed restrictions on banking access, currency controls and cross-border payments.
"I have often said that bitcoin and decentralized technologies represent a profound challenge to authoritarian control," Timmons said during the discussion.
The roundtable examined how digital assets may provide financial access for dissidents, journalists and activists by allowing them to store value, receive support from abroad and transfer funds without direct government interference.
Lawmakers also discussed the strategic importance of digital asset policy, with Timmons arguing that the United States should lead the development of global standards rather than allowing authoritarian governments to shape digital financial infrastructure.
China's efforts to expand state-controlled digital currency systems and cross-border payment networks also featured prominently, with participants raising concerns about financial surveillance, monetary influence and geopolitical competition.
The discussion reflected growing congressional interest in the relationship between cryptocurrency regulation, national security and financial freedom as lawmakers continue to evaluate the future role of digital assets in US policy.
