Tokenised securities push blockchain networks into institutional finance

Key points

  • The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has launched its tokenisation service, allowing eligible participants to create blockchain-based representations of securities held by its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company (DTC).
  • The market is expanding beyond cryptocurrency, with tokenised real-world assets reaching approximately US$39.3 billion in distributed value, excluding stablecoins, according to RWA.xyz data.
  • Regulatory controls, interoperability and investor protections remain central challenges as traditional securities infrastructure connects with public and private blockchain networks.

DTCC’s launch puts regulated securities tokenisation alongside blockchain networks and protocols building infrastructure for digital ownership, asset transfers and institutional finance.

The service allows eligible participants to convert securities held at DTC into tokenised representations while retaining the underlying ownership rights, investor protections and economic entitlements.

DTC holds more than US$114 trillion in assets, giving the initiative access to an established securities market.

Five blockchain projects connected to the tokenisation trend

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH)

Ethereum is a major network for tokenised securities and financial assets, with RWA.xyz recording approximately US$15.9 billion in distributed real-world assets on the blockchain as of 28 October 2026.

Its smart contracts let developers issue and manage digital assets, while DTCC’s launch reflects growing demand for connections between established securities infrastructure and blockchain-based markets.

Stellar (CRYPTO:XLM)

Stellar recorded approximately US$3.8 billion in distributed real-world assets as of 28 October 2026, according to RWA.xyz.

The network focuses on payments and tokenised financial products, and DTCC announced in May 2026 that its tokenisation service would connect with Stellar, with firms anticipating access to DTC-tokenised assets during the first half of 2027.

Ondo Finance (CRYPTO:ONDO)

Ondo Finance develops tokenised financial products, including US Treasury exposure and shares linked to publicly traded stocks.

RWA.xyz listed its USDY product at approximately US$2.38 billion and its OUSG product at about US$320 million on 28 October 2026, illustrating demand for blockchain-based access to traditional financial assets.

Canton Network (CRYPTO:CC)

Canton Network is designed for institutional financial applications that require privacy and interoperability across markets.

Its ecosystem has continued adding financial-market participants, including a September 2026 appointment of the London Stock Exchange Group as a super validator, while its native Canton Coin supports network participation and usage-based rewards.

Chainlink (CRYPTO:LINK)

Chainlink supplies data and interoperability infrastructure for blockchain-based financial applications rather than issuing tokenised securities itself.

DTCC announced in May 2026 that its Collateral AppChain would use Chainlink’s Runtime Environment and data standards to support near-real-time collateral workflows across financial markets and blockchains.

The bottom line

DTCC’s launch adds established securities infrastructure to a tokenisation market where Ethereum and Stellar already host billions of dollars in distributed assets, while Ondo Finance, Canton Network and Chainlink address different parts of the institutional blockchain stack.

The key test will be whether these systems can support wider adoption while maintaining regulatory compliance, investor protections and reliable transfers between traditional and digital markets.
