Russia sanctions teen over A7A5 stablecoin report

Alexander Browder, the 17-year-old son of political activist Bill Browder, said Russia sanctioned him after he published research alleging the ruble-pegged A7A5 stablecoin was being used to evade Western sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine.

In a post on X, Browder said his work through the Global Cryptocurrency Laundering Database resulted in him being targeted by Russian authorities after he reported that A7A5 was backed by deposits from Russian financial institution Promsvyazbank.

“The Ruble-backed stablecoin A7A5 is one of the most prevalent issues facing the West,”

Said Alexander Browder.

“It is sanctioned in the UK, US and EU but it still operates.”

He added.

Browder alleged that A7A5 maintains value because it can be converted into cash through exchanges and urged Western governments to increase pressure on platforms and jurisdictions that facilitate such transactions.

According to a recent CertiK report, A7A5 processed more than $110 billion in onchain transactions, while European Union officials sanctioned the stablecoin in October 2025, saying it was designed to help bypass financial restrictions imposed on Russia.

Bill Browder said his son may be the first high school student sanctioned by an authoritarian government for exposing alleged corruption, with reports suggesting Alexander Browder could be the youngest person ever sanctioned by Russia.

The development comes as Russian lawmakers consider legislation that would impose criminal penalties on unlicensed digital asset services and require crypto businesses to register with the country's central bank, with proposed restrictions potentially taking effect from July 2027.
