Osaka Exchange targets 2028 Bitcoin futures launch

Share

The Osaka Exchange plans to launch a Bitcoin futures market in 2028 as Japan advances regulatory reforms aimed at integrating digital assets into mainstream financial markets.

The proposed launch aligns with plans by Japan’s Financial Services Agency to amend the Investment Trust Act enforcement order by 2028, allowing cryptocurrencies to be recognised as an eligible asset class within regulated investment trusts.

The regulatory changes are expected to create a legal framework for institutional participation in crypto markets while supporting the development of Bitcoin-linked investment products.

The exchange said the futures market is designed to meet growing demand from institutional investors seeking risk-management tools as exposure to Bitcoin ETFs expands.

A regulated Bitcoin futures market could improve price discovery, enhance market transparency and provide asset managers with mechanisms to hedge against cryptocurrency volatility.

Japan has taken a measured approach to digital asset regulation, previously focusing on exchange oversight, investor protection and anti-money laundering compliance before expanding into broader institutional adoption.

The initiative positions Japan among the leading financial centres embracing regulated crypto infrastructure and could help the Osaka Exchange attract global institutional capital as demand for digital asset products continues to grow.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $62,702.18.
