Bitcoin faces inflation squeeze as CPI tops 4%
Bitcoin and gold could face further pressure after US consumer inflation accelerated to 4.2% in May, dampening expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts and weighing on investor appetite for risk assets.
The latest Consumer Price Index reading has reinforced concerns that borrowing costs may remain elevated for longer, with Bitcoin down 36% since January and gold retreating 23% from its peak while oil prices have climbed more than 50% over the same period.
“Today’s in-line CPI print keeps the Fed cautious, data-dependent, and in no rush to cut,”
Said Theo chief investment officer, Iggy Ioppe.
Ioppe said the inflation data was unlikely to provide a clear catalyst for Bitcoin, adding that liquidity expectations remain constrained and risk assets are being driven more by market positioning than hopes of imminent monetary easing.
“We do not believe this data is sufficiently encouraging to prompt Wall Street investors to meaningfully reallocate into Bitcoin,”
Said 10x Research head of research, Markus Thielen.
Thielen said institutional investors are likely to wait for stronger evidence that inflation is moving lower before increasing crypto exposure, while ongoing tensions involving Iran and the risk of oil supply disruptions could add further upward pressure to inflation expectations.
He added that Bitcoin remains vulnerable in the current macroeconomic environment and warned that a move below US$60,000 appears increasingly likely in the near term.
CME Fed futures currently indicate a 98.4% probability that the US central bank will leave interest rates unchanged at its June 17 policy meeting.
HashKey Group senior researcher Tim Sun said expectations for rate hikes have increased, but the likelihood of the Federal Reserve raising rates this year remains relatively low.
Sun said a sustained improvement in risk appetite is unlikely until inflation declines, rate cuts become feasible and broader liquidity conditions improve across financial markets.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $62,588.41.
