Sembcorp finalises $6.5B takeover of Alinta Energy

Singaporean energy giant Sembcorp has finalised its landmark $6.5 billion takeover of Alinta Energy, securing a foothold in the Australian market and accelerating its global green energy transition.

By acquiring Western Australia’s largest privately owned energy retailer from Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises—which bought Alinta in 2017 for an estimated $4 billion—Sembcorp absorbs a formidable 3.4GW operating portfolio and a 10.4GW development pipeline.

The acquisition anchors Australia as a key growth market for Sembcorp, aligning with its ambitious target to scale its global renewables capacity to 25GW by 2028.

Sembcorp reassured stakeholders that Alinta will maintain its existing brand, operating structure, and Melbourne headquarters.

This provides immediate continuity for the company's 1.1 million customers and more than 1,000 employees.

Incumbent CEO Jeff Dimery and his current leadership team will remain at the helm to oversee operations, which include power stations across Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, and New Zealand, alongside WA's largest retail gas network.

"With completion behind us, we can focus on execution and continue delivering for our customers and the communities we serve," Dimery said, noting that Sembcorp’s financial strength and long-term commitment will crucialise the investments needed for a cleaner energy future.

Sembcorp has confirmed plans to immediately deploy capital within Australia to fast-track Alinta’s committed development pipeline.
