Key points

  • National Australia Bank named Ian Saines as chair-elect to succeed Philip Chronican in July 2027.
  • The transition follows an 11-year board tenure by Philip Chronican, including eight years as chair.
  • The board stated the appointment adds deep banking experience to guide the bank through industry uncertainty.

National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB) appointed Ian Saines as a non-executive director and chair-elect ahead of his July 2027 start.

The handover marks the end of Philip Chronican's 11-year board tenure, which included eight years as chair.

“Ian is well placed to lead the NAB board given his deep knowledge of financial services from the perspectives of major Australian and international finance and wealth organisations,” said National Australia Bank Chair Philip Chronican.

Saines will officially join the board in March 2027 before assuming the leadership role four months later.

Following the announcement, the National Australia Bank share price was unchanged at $40.00.

Saines previously led institutional banking at Commonwealth Bank of Australia and served as a Macquarie Bank director until his resignation.

He also served 16 years on the board of NYSE-listed Air Lease Corporation until April 2026.
