Clinical-stage biopharmaceutical firm Dimerix (ASX:DXB) secured a United States patent for its drug candidate DMX-652 through 2043.
The patent issuance follows the recent acquisition of the therapy to address acute kidney injury during cardiac surgery.
"The granting of this core patent is a key milestone for Dimerix as it strengthens our comprehensive intellectual property portfolio and further protects our new asset, DMX-652, until at least 2043 in the United States," said Dimerix CEO and Managing Director Dr Nina Webster.
The company reported that approximately one in four patients develops acute kidney injury following on-pump cardiac surgery.
Following the announcement, the Dimerix share price was up at $0.25.
Dimerix stated it is currently preparing to initiate a Phase 2 trial for the drug candidate in cardiac surgery patients.
The biopharmaceutical company also continues development of its lead candidate, DMX-200, in Phase 3 clinical trials.
