Australian electric vehicle sales hit record high in April

Australia's automotive landscape reached a milestone this April, as electric vehicles surged to represent 16.4% of all new car sales—effectively one in every six vehicles hitting the road.

Despite broader economic headwinds and the looming threat of interest rate rises, the national market remained remarkably resilient, recording 92,591 total sales, a 2.2% increase over the previous year.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber attributed this momentum to a "perfect storm" of favourable conditions: the impact of the New Vehicle Efficiency Scheme, rising petrol costs, and the critical stimulus provided by the Federal Government’s electric car discount.

With approximately 110 EV models now available to local consumers, supply is finally meeting a burgeoning demand.

While Toyota maintained its traditional dominance with 15,185 units sold, the Chinese manufacturer BYD claimed the second-place mantle, capturing 8.3% of the total market.

The performance underscores the rapid ascendancy of Chinese-made vehicles, which now account for nearly a third of all Australian sales.

In the popular model rankings, the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Ranger continued their battle for the top spot, but newcomers like the BYD Sealion 7 and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro are rapidly gaining ground.

However, Weber cautioned that this rapid uptake necessitates an urgent "step change" in charging infrastructure investment.

As the electric car discount remains in effect, the industry expects this electrified momentum to redefine Australian motoring throughout the remainder of 2026.
