Australia unemployment rate rises to 4.6% in August
- The Australian unemployment rate rose to 4.6% in August as more people entered the job market.
- Part-time jobs increased by 46,000, while full-time roles fell by 6,000.
- The participation rate grew by 0.2 percentage points to reach a total of 67.1%.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that the nation's unemployment rate rose to 4.6% in August despite the economy adding 39,000 total jobs.
The monthly increase in joblessness follows a broader trend where a higher proportion of people transitioned directly from outside the workforce into active job seeking.
“This month there were 39,000 more people in employment and 28,000 more people in unemployment,” said ABS Head of Labour Statistics Sean Crick.
Total monthly hours worked rebounded by 0.7%, adding 14 million hours to fully offset the identical drop recorded during July.
Looking ahead, the annual growth rates for total employment and hours worked remain tightly aligned at 1.6% and 1.7%, respectively.
Following the announcement, the Australian dollar exchange rate was unchanged against major trading pairs.
The latest figures incorporate an updated survey collection methodology designed to remove historical August data distortions.
The statistical agency confirmed that trend estimates continue to provide the most reliable measure of underlying labour conditions.
