Anchorage Digital seeks CFTC approval for crypto options
Key points
- Anchorage Digital applied for swap dealer registration through the National Futures Association (NFA).
- Approval would allow its subsidiary to offer European-style Bitcoin and Ether options with maturities of up to one year.
- The application aims to bring its institutional options business under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) regulatory framework.
Anchorage Digital has submitted its swap dealer registration application through the NFA, seeking CFTC oversight for its institutional options business.
Demand from public companies holding Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) has helped drive growth in its existing options business.
“Swap dealer registration will allow us to meet them there,” Anchorage Digital Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Nathan McCauley said in a statement.
If approved, Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC plans to offer European-style options on Bitcoin and Ether, with maturities reaching one year.
The company may introduce additional products later, subject to regulatory requirements and internal approval processes.
Swap dealer registration would place its derivatives operations under federal rules covering capital, risk management, margin, trade reporting and counterparty treatment.
Anchorage Digital already serves institutions through federally chartered Anchorage Digital Bank, which operates under the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
The application remains under review, with approval and the timing of any product launch still uncertain.
