
Summit Therapeutics reports positive lung cancer trial data
- Summit Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SMMT) published Phase III HARMONi trial results for ivonescimab in EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer.
- Ivonescimab plus chemotherapy improved median progression-free survival to 6.8 months from 4.4 months versus chemotherapy alone.
- The company reported a positive overall survival trend, although results had not reached statistical significance at the analysis point.
Summit Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SMMT) announced publication of primary analysis results from the Phase III HARMONi clinical trial, showing ivonescimab combined with chemotherapy improved progression-free survival in patients with EGFR-mutated advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
The trial evaluated patients whose disease progressed after treatment with third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors, with results published in The Lancet Oncology from 114 cancer centers and hospitals across Asia, Europe, and North America.
“The HARMONi results suggest that ivonescimab’s mechanism of action, targeting of PD-1 and VEGF simultaneously in one construct, may offer a clinically meaningful strategy with the potential to improve outcomes for patients,” said Xiuning Le, Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and lead author of the manuscript.
At the primary analysis, median progression-free survival was 6.8 months for patients receiving ivonescimab plus chemotherapy compared with 4.4 months for patients receiving placebo plus chemotherapy, with a hazard ratio of 0.52 and p<0.0001.
Summit Therapeutics reported that overall survival showed a positive trend at the primary analysis but did not reach statistical significance, while treatment-related grade 3–5 hemorrhage events occurred in less than 1% of patients receiving ivonescimab plus chemotherapy.
The company stated that HARMONi evaluated ivonescimab’s potential in a patient group where treatment options remain limited following progression on EGFR-directed therapy.
Summit Therapeutics is developing oncology medicines, including ivonescimab, an investigational therapy designed to target PD-1 and VEGF pathways in cancer treatment.
