  • Moderna shares climbed 2.2% to $193.01 premarket after Nasdaq said the vaccine maker will join the Nasdaq-100 Index.
  • The change takes effect before the market opens on October 9, with Moderna replacing Warner Bros. Discovery.
  • Nasdaq-100 inclusion can create additional demand from passive investment products that track the benchmark.

Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) shares climbed 2.2% to $193.01 premarket after Nasdaq said the vaccine maker will replace Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ:WBD) in the Nasdaq-100 Index on October 9.

The move follows a 540.7% year-to-date gain for Moderna through October 1, compared with an approximately 12% rise for the S&P 500 over the same period.

Nasdaq said Moderna will become a Nasdaq-100 component before the market opens on Friday, October 9, replacing Warner Bros. Discovery in the benchmark.

The Nasdaq-100 tracks 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq and is followed by more than 200 investment products managing over $800 billion globally.

Index inclusion can result in buying by passive funds that track the Nasdaq-100, and following the announcement, Moderna's share price was up 2.2% at $193.01 in premarket trading.

Moderna had a market value of roughly $75 billion after its shares rose more than sixfold during 2026, according to Reuters.

Warner Bros. Discovery is also set for removal from other major indexes as its merger with Paramount Skydance is expected to close on October 6.
