Joby completes 3,199-mile autonomous flight

Joby Aviation (NYSE:JOBY) announced that an aircraft equipped with its autonomy technology completed the first autonomous flight across the United States, covering 3,199 miles without control inputs from its onboard safety pilot.

The converted Cessna Caravan completed autonomous taxiing, takeoffs, navigation and landings under remote supervision from Joby’s Autonomy Headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

The aircraft demonstrated autonomous operations across multiple environments, including integration into high-density aviation areas, weather-related rerouting and operations without prior airport familiarity.

Joby said its autonomy technology is designed to support applications including commercial freight, medical transport, disaster response and defense logistics alongside future aviation operations.

The company said its autonomy system has completed more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours in controlled and uncontrolled airspace, with additional demonstrations planned during the aircraft’s return westbound journey.
