Ambassador James F. Jeffrey on Trump extends Iran truce, blockade

President Donald Trump announced he was extending a ceasefire with Iran indefinitely a day before it was set to expire, even as plans for a fresh round of talks between the two countries fell apart. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Tuesday he would maintain a blockade over ships coming to and from Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. He said Pakistan, which had mediated between the two sides, asked for the US to hold off on fresh strikes and he was extending the ceasefire until Iran submits a new proposal "and discussions are concluded, one way or the other." Ambassador James F. Jeffrey, Philip Solondz Distinguished Fellow at The Washington Institute and former Deputy National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush, joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss. He speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.

Oil Traders Say Billion-Barrel Hole Will Linger Long After War

The impact of the Iran war will continue for months even after any deal to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the world's largest oil traders have warned. Some said flows through the waterway may never return to normal. Speaking at the FT Commodities Global Summit in Lausanne, executives at some of the world's largest oil traders warned that the rewiring of the oil market would take months even if a peace deal is agreed soon. The market is not fully reflecting the impact of the massive supply disruption, they said, cautioning that prices will need to ratchet higher to the point of pushing the global economy toward a recession if the conflict continues. Samantha Dart, Goldman Sachs Co-Head of Global Commodities Research, joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss. She speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.

Apple Bets CEO Ternus Will Bring Back Jobs-Era Decisiveness

When Apple announced Monday that longtime leader Tim Cook would be replaced by John Ternus, it published an image of the two executives walking side by side at the company's campus in Cupertino, California. Both men are wearing Apple Watches, dark button-up shirts and blue jeans as they smile at each other a near mirror image. The implication: Ternus, Apple's hardware head, will bring continuity as chief executive officer and help preserve Cook's legacy.  But Ternus will have a challenge when he officially takes the job in September. Even as he maintains Apple's device empire and its more than $400 billion in annual revenue the executive will need to take chances, enter new product categories and find the company's footing in artificial intelligence. Mark Gurman, Bloomberg News Managing Editor for Global Consumer Tech, joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss. He speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.
