Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) secured a 4.8 MW fuel cell order from Siemens Mobility for 12 passenger trains in Romania.
The European transaction builds upon a multi-year supply commitment previously established between the two manufacturing companies in 2022.
The hardware agreement comprises 24 individual FCrail modules, with each physical unit rated at a capacity of 200 kW.
The company stated that it expects fuel cell engine deliveries in 2027 and 2028 ahead of passenger service in 2029.
Following the announcement regarding the forward-looking commercial railway deployment, the Ballard Power Systems share price was down at $2.06.
The completed order will officially constitute the first fully hydrogen-powered railway fleet to operate within the country of Romania.
The operational transaction also represents the first time the Mireo Plus H rail platform will be deployed outside of Germany.
