Wall Street fee pressure reshapes Bitcoin ETF race

Share
  • Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) proposed a 0.14% fee for its spot Bitcoin ETF, positioning it below every major US-listed rival if regulators approve the fund.
  • The filing targets a spot Bitcoin ETF market worth roughly US$83 billion to US$92 billion, where fee competition has become a key driver of investor flows.
  • Regulatory approval remains the main hurdle, while lower fees could pressure competing issuers to adjust pricing across the sector.

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) has proposed a 0.14% annual fee for its Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (CRYPTO:MSBT), a level that would make it the cheapest spot Bitcoin ETF in the United States if approved by regulators.

The filing places Morgan Stanley below the current low-cost leader, Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (CRYPTO:BTC), which charges 0.15%, and well below BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (CRYPTO:IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (CRYPTO:FBTC), which each charge 0.25%.

“The Trust will pay the unitary Delegated Sponsor Fee which is accrued daily at an annualized rate of 0.14% of the net asset value of the Trust,” Morgan Stanley stated in its filing.

The move comes as issuers compete for assets in a US spot Bitcoin ETF market estimated at between US$83 billion and US$92 billion, where management fees increasingly influence investor decisions.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart described the pricing as a “big move” and said the fund could launch shortly after approval, according to reports covering the filing.

Following the announcement, Morgan Stanley shares were unchanged in the filing reports reviewed.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC)

Bitcoin remains the underlying asset for every US spot Bitcoin ETF and continues to dominate institutional crypto allocations, with ETF issuers competing primarily on fees, liquidity and distribution rather than exposure itself.

Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (CRYPTO:MSBT)

MSBT is Morgan Stanley’s proposed spot Bitcoin ETF and would become the lowest-cost product in the category at 0.14%, while also benefiting from Morgan Stanley’s wealth management network if approved.

Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (CRYPTO:BTC)

Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust currently sits at a 0.15% fee and has served as the benchmark for low-cost Bitcoin ETF exposure since its launch.

BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (CRYPTO:IBIT)

IBIT remains the largest spot Bitcoin ETF by assets under management and charges 0.25%, making it one of the main targets of Morgan Stanley’s pricing strategy.

Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (CRYPTO:FBTC)

FBTC is another major institutional Bitcoin ETF competitor with a 0.25% fee structure and a large presence in the US wealth management market.

The bottom line

Morgan Stanley’s proposed 0.14% fee highlights how the US spot Bitcoin ETF market is shifting from product launches to price competition, with issuers increasingly using lower costs to attract investor assets while awaiting further regulatory approvals and broader institutional adoption.
