Vitalik Buterin challenges AI with anonymity test

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), challenged internet users to identify an anonymous Ethereum document he said he wrote earlier this decade without attaching his name to it.

The experiment follows claims that artificial intelligence could make online anonymity harder to maintain by analysing writing styles and matching them to known authors.

“So let me cannibalise a piece of my own anonymity to do an experiment,” said Buterin.

Buterin described the target as a medium-importance Ethereum document and estimated that between 200 and 2,000 Ethereum documents would rank as important or more important than the unidentified work.

The challenge remains unresolved, with no publicly confirmed identification of the document at the time of publication, and following the announcement the ETH price was unavailable.

The test focuses on stylometry, a technique that compares writing patterns, vocabulary and sentence structure to identify likely authors from large collections of text.

The initiative follows Buterin's recent comments on AI safety, software verification and Ethereum privacy, extending the debate to whether AI tools could eventually weaken anonymity for pseudonymous contributors within blockchain communities.
