Mastercard expands fraud checks for stablecoin payments
- Mastercard has introduced Stablecoin Security, a risk-intelligence service designed to detect fraud and sanctions exposure in stablecoin payments.
- Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the initial partners, integrating the service into stablecoin payment flows.
- The rollout extends Mastercard’s fraud-prevention tools into blockchain transactions, where transfers can be difficult to reverse once completed.
Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE:MA) launched Stablecoin Security on 19 October, extending its fraud-detection capabilities to stablecoin payments.
The service combines payment intelligence with blockchain analytics to help financial institutions assess risks before funds move on-chain, addressing complex transfers across borders.
“By bringing payment and blockchain insights together, Stablecoin Security extends Mastercard’s fraud and risk capabilities to digital asset payments,” Ann Johnson, executive vice president of Security Solutions at Mastercard said in a statement.
The system analyses transaction context, fund origins, restricted-party exposure and scam indicators, then generates a risk score before payment completion.
“Stablecoin payments should be simple to launch and manage, even when the infrastructure behind them is complex,” said Alex Garn, chief product officer at Borderless.xyz said in a statement.
Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the initial partners, with Borderless connecting financial institutions to licensed stablecoin providers across more than 113 countries and 72 currencies.
Mastercard will launch the service first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027 and further expansion planned through BVNK, acquired in August 2026.
Following the announcement, Mastercard shares were down 0.17% at US$616.40.
