Ethereum targets $104B against quantum attacks
- Ethereum developers proposed changes to protect staked ETH from future quantum attacks.
- About 42.4 million ETH is currently staked, worth roughly $104 billion.
- The proposal is an early draft, with wider upgrades targeted around 2029.
Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) developers proposed changes to protect about $104 billion in staked ETH from quantum attacks.
The draft would rebuild Ethereum’s validator deposit system to support new types of cryptographic keys.
Ethereum currently uses BLS keys, which quantum computers could potentially break using Shor’s algorithm.
The proposal would let validators use different key sizes and label each deposit by its security system.
About 42.4 million ETH is currently staked, worth roughly $104 billion at current prices.
The draft could later stop new validators from using BLS keys, but existing BLS validators would remain active.
The proposal remains under review, while the Ethereum Foundation is targeting around 2029 for wider quantum-resistant upgrades.
At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $2,494.31.
