Ethereum and Base split over account abstraction

  • Ethereum and Base developers have ended efforts to combine two account abstraction proposals.
  • Ethereum will continue with EIP-8141, while Base will develop EIP-8130 separately.
  • Wallet developers may need to support two transaction formats if both proposals reach production.

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) and Base developers have ended efforts to create one account abstraction standard.

The teams could not reconcile EIP-8141 and EIP-8130 without compromising core technical goals.

“So separate ways we went, putting the burden on wallets to deal with the fragmentation that ensues,” said Derek Chiang of Ethlabs.

Both proposals aim to simplify crypto wallets by supporting sponsored gas fees and alternative authentication methods.

Ethereum is prioritising censorship resistance, privacy and security through EIP-8141, which is planned for the Hegotá upgrade.

Base will continue developing EIP-8130, which uses an onchain keystore for approved signers and authenticator contracts.

The split could leave wallet developers supporting two native transaction formats if both proposals eventually reach production.

At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $2,483.71
