Bitcoin mining uses 30% of Paraguay’s energy, raising concerns about the country’s power supply by 2029.
Energy researcher Victorio Oxilia said mining uses power equal to one-and-a-half Itaipu dam turbines.
Mining contracts expire in 2027, and their extensions remain uncertain, according to the report.
Analyst Cecilia Llamosas said Paraguay needs $11 billion–$15 billion in energy investment over 13 years.
She said mining demand can be reduced during peak periods because operators can switch equipment off.
Paraguay’s only major current power project is Aña Cuá, which is expected to add 135 megawatts.
Authorities are also increasing efforts to stop illegal power use by Bitcoin miners, including prosecutions.
