Andreessen Horowitz has renamed its crypto fund a16z Frontier, expanding its investment focus beyond digital assets.
The firm plans to back startups developing frontier technologies and creating markets that may take years to mature.
“Today we’re announcing that we’re expanding the scope of our new fund beyond crypto startups to the broader category of frontier startups: companies building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to develop,” said Chris Dixon, managing partner of a16z Frontier.
The firm will continue investing in crypto ventures while advocating for regulatory policies that support the sector.
Dixon identified artificial intelligence opportunities, including new products, autonomous devices and networks connecting people with AI agents.
The fund will be led by Dixon alongside Andreessen Horowitz founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, plus general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.
The firm’s operating teams will support portfolio companies with regulatory matters, market entry, recruitment, marketing and technical research and development.
The rebrand broadens a16z’s investment mandate while preserving its existing focus on cryptocurrency ventures.
