Meta terminates PlaySide Studios contracts
Video game developer PlaySide Studios (ASX:PLY) announced that Meta Platforms Technologies will prematurely terminate its outsourced development contracts for the Horizon Worlds social platform.
The decision stems from internal restructuring within Meta, with all related work now scheduled to conclude on July 31.
The contracts had previously been extended through to Dec. 31.
PlaySide management anticipates the cancellation will result in a revenue hit of approximately $4 million for FY27.
Despite the setback, the company confirmed its FY26 revenue guidance remains unchanged, projecting a healthy cash balance of $14–15 million by June 30.
The contract loss has prompted PlaySide to initiate a consultancy process with several employees, which management acknowledges will likely result in redundancies to realign its cost base.
However, other major projects—including Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the post-launch roadmap for MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, and the Dumb Ways to Die publishing agreement—remain unaffected.
PlaySide emphasised that the termination was a "counterparty decision" rather than a reflection of its performance, noting that its partnership with Meta had grown consistently since 2021.
While labelling the loss a setback for its External Projects pipeline, management stated that rebuilding this pipeline is an immediate priority.
The company has expanded its business development team over the past six months to target international clients.
At the time of reporting, PlaySide Studios’ share price was $0.16.
