
Goldwind secures approval for hybrid NSW wind project
- Goldwind secured planning approval from the New South Wales government to integrate battery units directly into each turbine of its Coppabella wind farm.
- The regulatory clearance allows up to 53 battery storage units generating 222.6 megawatts and 1,063 megawatt-hours of energy capacity, while grid export will cap at 270 megawatts.
- Goldwind aims to create a dynamic infrastructure system to better support high-value renewable energy delivery across the New South Wales electricity grid.
Goldwind obtained planning approval to build an integrated battery and wind energy project at its Coppabella site near Yass in New South Wales.
The green light follows an update to technical standards previously set for traditional single-source generation facilities.
"Integrating battery storage into Coppabella’s project design will improve the project’s ability to support higher-value renewable energy delivery and provide greater operational flexibility in the NSW region of the National Electricity Market," said Goldwind CEO Ning Chen.
The project will deploy up to 53 individual battery units within the turbine construction footprints to provide 222.6 megawatts and 1,063 megawatt-hours of storage capacity.
Goldwind stated that the combined assets will allow the farm to respond dynamically to changing energy market conditions.
The developer has also secured performance requirement approvals for the grid setup from the Australian Energy Market Operator and network owner Transgrid.
