Tornado Cash

About

Tornado Cash is a decentralized, non-custodial privacy solution built on the Ethereum blockchain that enables anonymous financial transactions. Launched in 2019, the protocol uses zero-knowledge cryptography, specifically zk-SNARKs, to break the on-chain link between recipient and destination addresses. Users deposit cryptocurrency into smart contracts and later withdraw the funds using a cryptographic proof without revealing the original deposit address. The protocol's governance is decentralized via a DAO utilizing its native TORN token. Although designed to provide transactional privacy, Tornado Cash faced regulatory sanctions by the United States Department of the Treasury in August 2022 due to illicit usage.

Products and/or services of Tornado Cash

  • ETH Pools: Smart contract liquidity pools on Ethereum allowing non-custodial deposits and withdrawals of fixed amounts of Ether, such as 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 ETH, utilizing zk-SNARK cryptographic proofs to anonymize transaction histories.
  • ERC-20 Token Pools: Dedicated privacy pools supporting popular ERC-20 tokens including DAI, USDC, USDT, and WBTC on Ethereum, enabling users to obscure token transfers using fixed-denomination deposit contracts and zero-knowledge verification techniques.
  • Relayer Network: A decentralized network of third-party node operators that submit withdrawal transactions to the blockchain on behalf of users, allowing withdrawals to fresh addresses without requiring ETH to pay for gas fees.
  • Multi-Chain Deployments: Smart contract protocol instances deployed across secondary EVM-compatible blockchains and layer-2 networks, including Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, and Optimism, providing cross-chain transactional privacy features.
  • Governance DAO and Staking: A decentralized governance system enabling token holders to submit and vote on protocol upgrades, manage treasury funds, and stake governance tokens in smart contracts to participate in network decision-making processes.
  • Compliance Tooling and Certificates: An optional cryptographic disclosure tool enabling users to generate proof of deposit origin and view full transaction history, allowing individuals to demonstrate source of funds to regulatory authorities or exchanges.
