CoW Protocol is a decentralized trading protocol and DEX aggregator built on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible blockchain networks. It uses batch auctions as its primary price-discovery mechanism to settle trades off-chain before submitting them on-chain. By batching orders together, the protocol enables Coincidence of Wants settlements where trades are matched directly against each other, eliminating liquidity provider fees and slippage. External solvers compete in permissionless auctions to find the most optimal execution path for user orders. This architecture protects traders against maximal extractable value, including front-running and sandwich attacks, while offering gasless orders and surplus sharing.
