WeRide, Uber, and AVOMO to launch Spain’s first commercial robotaxi pilot

Autonomous driving technology developer WeRide (NASDAQ:WRD), ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER), and fleet management platform AVOMO have unveiled a joint initiative to launch Spain’s first commercial robotaxi pilot in the Region of Madrid.

Scheduled to begin operations later in 2026, the service will allow passengers to request autonomous vehicle trips directly through the standard Uber smartphone application.

The strategic partnership represents a significant step forward in the commercialization of Level 4 autonomous transit within southern Europe.

Under the framework of the agreement, the companies plan a progressive scaling of operations.

While the pilot will begin with a targeted service footprint, the long-term roadmap envisions expanding the deployment to include hundreds of robotaxis, ultimately transitioning into a fully driverless commercial service spanning Madrid's core urban areas.

The collaboration aligns closely with Uber’s broader global strategy to integrate autonomous vehicle fleets into its existing network via asset-light partnerships rather than building proprietary self-driving hardware.

For WeRide, the expansion into Spain builds upon its recent international momentum, which includes commercial driverless deployments in the Middle East and public transit trials in other parts of Western Europe.

Local partner AVOMO will oversee localized fleet operations, handling vehicle maintenance, deployment logistics, and adherence to regional regulatory frameworks as the fleet scales.
