Uber partners for Tokyo robotaxi pilot in 2026

• The partnership expands Uber’s autonomous mobility efforts in Japan, with rides planned through the Uber app using Nissan LEAF vehicles equipped with Wayve AI Driver technology.
• Uber said the pilot will begin with safety operators before any future driverless operations, which would require regulatory approval.

Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) announced that Uber Japan has partnered with Hinomaru Kotsu to manage fleet operations for an autonomous vehicle pilot in Tokyo scheduled to begin in late 2026.

The agreement follows a March 2026 memorandum of understanding between Uber, Wayve, and Nissan, which outlined plans to deploy Nissan LEAF vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver technology for robotaxi services in Japan.

Under the agreement, Hinomaru Kotsu will handle depot operations, vehicle cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging, and fleet uptime, while Uber will provide its ride-matching platform and operational support tools.

Uber said the initial pilot phase will include experienced Hinomaru Kotsu drivers serving as safety operators inside vehicles, with fully driverless operations dependent on future regulatory approval.

Hinomaru Kotsu is a Japanese taxi operator that will serve as the authorized passenger transport provider under local regulations, while Uber continues expanding its autonomous mobility partnerships.

Uber has also been developing autonomous driving partnerships across markets as it works with technology companies and vehicle manufacturers to introduce automated transportation services.
