Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
The meeting follows the recent seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces in Caracas.
Trump has so far declined to formally endorse Machado as Venezuela’s new leader despite her movement claiming victory in the disputed 2024 election.
The United States has instead backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice-president, as interim leader.
Machado said she wanted to thank Trump for action taken against Maduro and said she wished to give him her Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump said the gesture was “a great honour,” Donald Trump said, though the Nobel Committee later clarified the prize could not be transferred.
Asked whether the meeting could change his view of Machado’s role, Trump said she “might be involved in some aspect of it."
Trump previously said Machado lacked sufficient support within Venezuela, despite describing her as “a very nice woman.”
The White House said Delcy Rodríguez has been cooperative with Washington since Maduro’s removal.
Machado rejected US backing of Rodríguez, calling her a central figure in repression and insisting her coalition should lead Venezuela.
