  • TotalEnergies will appeal a Paris court order requiring customer-use emissions in its corporate vigilance plan.
  • Paris-listed shares were down 2.4% at €74.11 following the announcement.
  • The company argues that French vigilance law does not cover global climate change or customers’ independent activities.

TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) will appeal a court order requiring Scope 3 climate risks in its vigilance plan within six months.

The June 25 ruling covered customer-use emissions but rejected demands to stop new oil and gas projects or reduce production.

TotalEnergies argues that climate change is a global issue outside France’s corporate duty of vigilance law.

It also argues that the law covers controlled operations and suppliers, not customers using products independently.

TotalEnergies will argue its case in Paris.

Following the announcement, its Paris shares were down 2.4% at €74.11.

Four associations and Paris filed the case in 2020, before a 2023 dismissal was overturned in 2024.

The court scheduled a January 21, 2027 review after rejecting requested production cuts and bans on new projects.
