Tesla FSD faces EU safety review concerns

• A European transport safety group urged EU member states to reject approval of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system over speed-limit concerns.
• The group raised concerns about a speed offset feature that it says may allow vehicles to exceed detected speed limits.
• EU-wide approval discussions have been delayed, with a vote now unlikely before December.

Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is facing regulatory scrutiny in Europe after the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) urged European Union member states to reject approval of the driver-assistance technology.

The safety group said Tesla’s system includes a speed offset function that could allow the vehicle’s maximum speed to increase by as much as 50% above the speed limit detected by the vehicle.

The ETSC said Tesla has not requested an exemption from United Nations Economic Commission for Europe rules that would allow the FSD system to exceed posted speed limits through the offset feature.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has argued that delaying approval of FSD could have safety consequences, while regulators in several European countries, including Sweden, France, and the Czech Republic, have raised concerns about the system.

The Dutch vehicle regulator RDW approved the system in April, followed by Belgium and other countries, but discussions over EU-wide approval have continued amid regulatory concerns.
