  • Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) coordinated more than 140,000 home batteries to deliver 580 megawatts of peak power to California’s grid.
  • The September 9, 2026 event represented the largest residential distributed energy dispatch reported to date.
  • The battery network provided grid support during an extreme heat wave and helped improve energy reliability.

Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) announced that more than 140,000 residential batteries supplied over 580 megawatts of peak power to California’s electricity grid during an extreme heat event on September 9, 2026.

The companies described the event as the largest residential distributed power plant dispatch to date, with battery capacity comparable to a large-scale power facility.

The combined battery network delivered enough power to support electricity demand equivalent to all households in Sacramento County during peak hours.

The dispatch was requested by California energy authorities and utilities and operated for three evening hours to strengthen grid operating margins and help reduce real-time energy market pressure.

Sunrun and Tesla coordinated approximately 517 megawatts from Tesla Powerwall systems and 63 megawatts from other residential battery systems.

More than 110,000 Powerwalls participated in the event, with over half owned and operated through Sunrun’s customer network.

The companies said the event demonstrated the growing role of distributed energy resources, where connected home batteries can function together as a flexible power resource for grid stability.
