Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is considering whether to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed Board of Peace for Gaza, according to government sources.
The board forms part of a White House 20-point plan aimed at ending the war between Israel and Hamas and overseeing Gaza’s temporary administration and reconstruction.
UK diplomats are seeking further clarification from the US State Department, with officials saying no formal invitation has yet been received.
US media reports suggest Trump is expected to announce the board’s members later this week.
Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair is expected to join a separate executive board alongside Trump advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
Trump said the board would include leading global figures, adding:
Essentially, it's the most important leaders of the most important nations.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK supported the 20-point plan but stressed that the ceasefire remained fragile and required continued international effort.
Starmer has maintained a constructive relationship with Trump despite differences over the UK’s recognition of the state of Palestine.
Addressing Labour MPs, Starmer defended his international focus, saying:
The cost of living crisis will not be solved by isolationism.
