
SpaceX shifts orbital data center launch plans ahead to 2027

SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) announced plans to launch its first AI-powered satellite systems in Q4 2027, with the company developing orbital computing infrastructure using Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) technology.
The timeline advances SpaceX’s previously stated target of launching AI satellites in 2028, while volume deployments are expected to scale during 2028.
“SpaceX, in partnership with Nvidia, has designed a space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 system for launch to orbit in Q4 next year, with significant scale in 2028,” said Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX.
SpaceX and Nvidia are working on deploying Nvidia Vera processors for AI workloads in orbit, including data processing, code execution, and AI system operations, although the deployment depends on successful satellite launches and supporting launch infrastructure.
The planned orbital data center rollout relies on SpaceX’s Starship rocket, which remains in testing and has not yet completed all planned high-altitude operational milestones required for some satellite missions.
SpaceX has previously developed satellite internet infrastructure through Starlink and is expanding into space-based computing applications through its AI satellite initiatives.
The company’s AI satellite plans come as Nvidia continues expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure business, with investors watching the impact of AI-related demand on the broader technology sector.
