Key points

  • SpaceX is reportedly discussing an acquisition of EchoStar's Boost Mobile business or access to its wireless network.
  • The discussions could give SpaceX access to existing mobile network infrastructure and support its entry into the US wireless market.
  • SpaceX wants to combine Starlink satellites with terrestrial mobile infrastructure to compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) is reportedly in talks with EchoStar (NASDAQ:ECHO) to acquire its Boost Mobile wireless business or secure access to its network as it prepares to launch its own branded mobile service.

The discussions, reported by The Washington Post, have taken place over recent months and could provide SpaceX with access to existing terrestrial mobile infrastructure through EchoStar's network arrangements with AT&T (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile US (NASDAQ:TMUS).

The reported options include purchasing Boost Mobile or negotiating an arrangement that would allow SpaceX to use its wireless network infrastructure without acquiring the business.

The proposed arrangement would support Starlink Mobile, a planned hybrid telecommunications service combining satellite connectivity with ground-based mobile infrastructure to extend coverage across the United States.

SpaceX has not announced a completed agreement, and the companies have not publicly confirmed the negotiations.

The discussions follow SpaceX's September 2025 agreement to acquire wireless spectrum licences from EchoStar in a transaction valued at approximately $17 billion, supporting its expansion into direct-to-device mobile connectivity.

SpaceX aims to compete with established US wireless operators AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, while Starlink's existing satellite network provides the foundation for its planned expansion into consumer mobile services.
