SK Hynix explores Intel U.S. chip deal
- SK Hynix is in talks with Intel about potential U.S. memory chip production.
- The discussions could involve leasing space at Intel’s Ohio chip facility or forming a joint venture.
- No agreement has been reached, and both companies said discussions remain under review.
SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) is in discussions with Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) about potential arrangements to manufacture memory chips in the United States, according to people familiar with the talks.
The discussions could involve SK Hynix leasing part of Intel’s planned Ohio chip manufacturing facility or forming a venture with Intel and major cloud companies seeking additional memory chip supplies.
SK Hynix said it is reviewing various measures, including additional production bases, to strengthen its memory business competitiveness, but added that no decisions have been made.
Following the report, Intel shares rose 5.2% in pre-market trading, while SK Hynix shares gained 4.1% in Seoul.
SK Hynix produces memory technologies including DRAM, NAND flash, and high-bandwidth memory used in artificial intelligence processing systems.
Intel announced plans in 2022 to invest up to $100 billion in an Ohio semiconductor complex, though production timelines for the planned facilities have been delayed to 2030 and 2031.
The potential agreement comes as governments and technology companies seek additional semiconductor capacity to support demand from artificial intelligence and data center markets.
