STMicroelectronics NV (NYSE:STM) has entered a strategic agreement with Italian robotics firm Oversonic to integrate cognitive humanoid robots into its global manufacturing and logistics network.
The partnership marks a significant step in the semiconductor giant’s push toward advanced automation, utilizing Oversonic’s "RoBee" humanoid to navigate the complex workflows of high-tech fabrication plants.
The collaboration has already seen its first deployment at STMicroelectronics’ advanced packaging and test facility in Malta.
Designed as a cognitive humanoid, RoBee is engineered to handle production and logistics tasks that require a higher degree of spatial awareness and adaptability than traditional stationary robotics.
The move signals ST’s intent to bolster its supply chain resilience and operational efficiency through the use of flexible, human-centric automation.
Oversonic, a 2020-founded startup based in Italy, has rapidly scaled its team to 65 professionals to meet the growing demand for versatile robotics.
Its RoBee platform is distinguished by certifications for both industrial and healthcare use, allowing it to operate safely in environments where human interaction is constant.
The companies plan to host a live international launch of the partnership at the upcoming CES, where they will demonstrate RoBee’s capabilities in real-time industrial applications.
For STMicroelectronics, the integration of humanoid technology represents an evolution in "Industry 5.0" standards, where cognitive machines work in tandem with human staff to manage increasingly complex manufacturing requirements.
Following the initial rollout in Malta, the custom-built robots are expected to be deployed across several other ST plants worldwide.
