KBR (NYSE:KBR) announced that its Mission Technology Solutions unit has been awarded a landmark $8 billion ceiling contract by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide comprehensive science and engineering support for the U.S. Antarctic Program.

The single-award, Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) task-order hybrid contract represents a massive, long-term commitment.

It features a 20-year period of performance that commences this month, establishing a highly stable revenue backlog for Houston-based KBR's government services portfolio deep into the mid-2040s.

Under the mandate of the contract, KBR will assume responsibility for the infrastructural and technological backbone of the NSF-led polar research efforts.

The scope of work encompasses operations, maintenance, complex logistics, information technology, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity enforcement.

This infrastructure support will span the U.S. Antarctic Program’s three year-round research stations—including the prominent McMurdo Station—as well as various seasonal field camps, specialized international gateways, and port logistics locations.

Beyond land-based infrastructure, KBR's mandate extends to providing specialized operational support for ongoing scientific missions across the frozen continent and aboard research vessels navigating the harsh environment of the Southern Ocean.
