Iridium completes acquisition of air traffic tracker
- Iridium (NASDAQ:IRDM) finalized its buyout of Aireon, taking full control of the world's only space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast air traffic surveillance system.
- The transaction combines real-time flight tracking intelligence with Iridium's primary global satellite communications and positioning capabilities.
- Iridium plans to operate the business as a wholly owned subsidiary to provide a single, unified network infrastructure for international aviation safety.
Iridium (NASDAQ:IRDM) announced it completed the acquisition of Aireon to combine global satellite communications with space-based air traffic surveillance.
The transaction involved purchasing the remaining 61% equity interest from co-owners including Nav Canada and NATS for approximately $366.7 million.
"The completion of the acquisition expands Iridium's role in the aviation ecosystem," stated the corporation in its official completion briefing announcement.
The acquired surveillance network operates as a dedicated payload across Iridium's existing low-Earth orbit satellite constellation to track commercial flights.
The acquired tracking business will operate as a standalone subsidiary under the ongoing leadership of Aireon Chief Executive Officer Don Thoma.
The parent company plans to absorb Aireon's outstanding commercial debt structure as part of the finalized infrastructure consolidation layout.
