Google to pay SpaceX US$920m a month for AI chips

Google is set to pay SpaceX about US$920 million every month from October through 2029 — roughly US$30 billion in total — to rent access to around 110,000 Nvidia GPUs in SpaceX data centres.

The deal is striking because Google already builds its own data centres and AI chips, and also owns an equity stake in SpaceX believed to be worth over US$100 billion.

As SpaceX, which acquired xAI in February, repurposes Grok’s GPU fleet into a cloud business and Anthropic reportedly pays even more per month for similar capacity, critics are questioning whether this is a durable revenue stream ahead of SpaceX’s giant IPO or a short‑term way to dress up growth at the perfect moment.
