Google faces UK search choice proposals

  • The UK Competition and Markets Authority proposed rules requiring Google to offer more search provider choices on Android and Chrome.
  • The proposals would allow eligible AI assistants, including services such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, to appear in search choice screens.
  • The CMA said the changes are intended to address shifts in how users access information through traditional search and AI tools.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority proposed new rules that would require Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) to give Android and Chrome users more choice over the search services they use.

The proposals would require Google to display search provider options during Android phone setup and Chrome use, while allowing users to review their default choice annually.

"The way people search for information online is changing," said Competition and Markets Authority Chief Executive Sarah Cardell.

The proposed rules would also allow AI assistants that meet technical and security requirements to appear on search choice screens and require search providers to fairly attribute publisher content.

The CMA said AI assistants are increasingly being used as information search tools but are not currently included in Google’s search choice screens.

The proposals are open for consultation until October 9, with the CMA expected to make a final decision by the end of the year after earlier measures requiring greater transparency on Google’s search ranking systems.
