Eli Lilly inks $1.9B deal with Ascidian Therapeutics for genetic kidney disease research
Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) has announced a significant research and licensing collaboration with Ascidian Therapeutics aimed at developing novel treatments for inherited kidney diseases.
The agreement, which could be worth up to $1.9 billion, grants Lilly exclusive, target-specific rights to Ascidian’s RNA exon-editing platform.
Under the terms of the deal, Ascidian will lead early-stage discovery and select preclinical activities for the programs.
Eli Lilly will assume responsibility for subsequent preclinical development, clinical trials, manufacturing, and global commercialization.
The agreement includes an initial upfront payment to Ascidian, supplemented by milestone payments tied to development and commercial benchmarks, alongside tiered royalties on worldwide product sales.
Ascidian’s technology enables the precise editing of multiple whole exons at the RNA level.
By repairing genetic instructions without permanently altering the patient’s underlying DNA, the approach seeks to offer a "differentiated clinical profile" compared to traditional CRISPR-based DNA modifications.
With more than 60 genetic diseases impacting the kidneys and millions of patients affected by severe hereditary conditions, the platform is designed to reach targets that were previously considered inaccessible.
This partnership represents the latest expansion of Eli Lilly’s genetic medicines portfolio.
The company has been aggressively deploying capital from its successful obesity and diabetes drug business into high-growth biotech sectors.
Year-to-date, Lilly has committed over $10 billion in upfront capital across multiple acquisitions and strategic partnerships, including the recent purchase of Engage Biologics and collaborations with firms such as Profluent and Seamless Therapeutics.
