Designer Brands Q1 sales edge higher on brand portfolio growth, reaffirms guidance

Designer Brands (NYSE:DBI) reported a slight expansion in its first-quarter top-line revenue, driven by strong growth within its wholesale division that helped offset softening demand across its core brick-and-mortar storefront network.

The Columbus-based footwear and accessories retailer recorded net sales of $696.4 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2026, representing a 1.4% improvement compared to the same period a year earlier.

The modest revenue growth occurred despite a 1.1% decline in total comparable store sales, demonstrating a divergence between the company's direct-to-consumer retail traffic and its commercial brand distribution channels.

Operational profitability showed notable resilience during the three-month period.

Designer Brands reported that its gross profit climbed to $315.3 million, with its gross margin expanding by 240 basis points to reach 45.3%.

The margin improvement suggests that promotional discipline and careful inventory clearance mitigated broader inflationary headwinds across the apparel supply chain.

For the quarter, the company posted reported net income of $1.2 million, or $0.02 per diluted share.

On an adjusted basis, diluted earnings per share landed at $0.07.

The primary catalyst for the period's performance was the company's proprietary manufacturing and design engine.

Net sales within the Brand Portfolio segment—which manages its national and owned footwear labels—surged 19.4% year-over-year, offsetting consumer headwinds within its retail stores.

Looking forward, corporate leadership expressed confidence in its operational trajectory by holding its previous financial targets steady.

Designer Brands reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance, continuing to project full-year net sales performance to range between a 1% decline and a 1% increase.

The company also maintained its anticipated full-year diluted earnings per share guidance of $0.28 to $0.38, with management highlighting that it expects final results to track toward the higher end of that target range.
