Wells Fargo Report Says GLP-1s Reducing Certain Surgeries

Robin Wenzel, head of Wells Fargo Industry Insights, said that the rise of GLP-1s has brought down the rate of bariatric surgery by more than 30%, providing a less invasive 'pharmaceutical offramp' for weight management. Wenzel said GLP-1 use rose 120% between 2022 and 2024 and that it offers the parts of the healthcare industry an opportunity to turn to helping patients manage medication or their side effects.

Walmart Slides Most Since 2022 on Slowing US Sales Growth

Bloomberg's Poonam Goyal said Walmart's earnings miss is largely due to lagging pharmaceutical sales impacted by new federal negotiations aimed at delivering lower drug prices. Goyal said that it's an issue that both the company and investors are expecting to continue affecting sales. Goyal said that Walmart could have the opportunity to calm concerns about flagging US sales growth by focusing on bringing in customers with competitive pricing.

China Says Trump Economic Warfare Won't Solve Iran Crisis

Anna Ashton, former Defense Department analyst for China, says that the US has significantly weakened its relationships and its weapons stockpiles ahead of President Xi's visit to the US in September and that Xi Jinping feels as if he has the upper hand heading into those talks. Ashton also weighed in on the US positioning in the region amid war with Iran, saying that the US is giving Beijing numerous signals that it's 'abandoning the Pacific as an area of primary focus.'

US Set to Cut Tariffs on Canada Metals, Autos in Trade Deal

The tentative trade deal between the US and Canada would lower tariffs on certain Canadian exports of steel and aluminum to 25% and cut duties on Canadian auto exports to 15%, according to people familiar with the matter. Tariffs on the non-US content in autos exported from Canada would be reduced to 15% from 25%, and the move on steel and aluminum under discussion would generally halve US tariffs on imports of the two metals.
