Burford Capital linked to $5.7 billion patent verdict
- Burford Capital said it has a financial entitlement connected to a jury award of $5.7 billion in the Taction Technology v. Apple patent case.
- If the award is paid unchanged, Burford’s entitlement would be approximately $1.4 billion, split between its balance sheet and investment funds.
- Burford said the verdict is not a final judgment and that appeals, post-trial proceedings, and collection efforts could affect any potential recovery.
Burford Capital (NYSE:BUR) said it has a financial entitlement in the Taction Technology v. Apple patent case, where a jury awarded the plaintiff $5.7 billion after the market closed on September 25, 2026.
The jury award has not become a final judgment, and Burford said that if the award were paid without changes, its entitlement would be approximately $1.4 billion, compared with the uncertain outcome of future legal proceedings.
Burford said the potential entitlement would be split roughly equally between amounts related to its balance sheet and investment funds, while post-trial motions, appeals, and collection efforts could reduce or eliminate any recovery.
Burford Capital provides legal finance and investment services, funding litigation and legal claims in exchange for financial interests in potential recoveries.
The company said it has not received any proceeds from the verdict and that the timing and amount of any possible recovery remain uncertain.
