Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Ethiopian Airlines announced today that the African flag carrier has converted options for six 787-9 Dreamliner jets into firm orders.

The agreement, finalized on April 21, 2026, underscores Ethiopian's commitment to maintaining one of the youngest and most efficient widebody fleets on the continent.

The addition of these six aircraft is a strategic move to facilitate the carrier's aggressive intercontinental network growth.

By operating the 787-9—a model known for its fuel efficiency and range—Ethiopian aims to increase its frequency on existing long-haul routes and open new destinations from its central hub at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.

Beyond passenger transport, the 787-9 provides a significant boost to belly cargo capacity.

This is a mechanical necessity for Ethiopian’s dual-pronged strategy of serving both the growing African travel market and the burgeoning global logistics trade.

The Dreamliner’s advanced composite structure allows for lower fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs, providing a competitive edge in the high-cost long-haul segment.
